WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE TOURISM ?
Sustainability principles refer to a suitable balance between the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural matters of tourism development. The World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as a form of "Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities".
The social approach of sustainable tourism relies on education of children and overall population, professionals and tourists altogether, based on local culture respect and conservation. To some extent tourism incomes can be used to support solidarity projects such as construction of infrastructures or providing teaching material.
The economic dimension of sustainable tourism covers financial resources management, local economy development thanks to tourism profit, as well as locally grown food investment and consumption.
Ecotourism raises issues regarding ecosystems preservation, use of sustainable energies, waste management, water quality, pollution as well as sites maintenance and cleanliness.
I can't stress enough the importance of public awareness. Too many ignorant tourists tend to adopt disrespectful practices when they are away from home. If damage can be done by everyone it also works the other way round : each one of us can be a significant actor by adopting a responsible attitude.
